Shoal Bay East is a long sweep of white and pink-hued sand with calm, clear turquoise water, and USA Today ranked it the #1 beach in the Caribbean in 2023. It stays uncrowded because Anguilla has no cruise ports and no high-rise hotels, and because the island spreads its visitors across 33 free public beaches. Villa Okeanos sits on the hill directly above it.
This one is about two miles long, and that length is the whole point.
The sand is the reason, and it is not marketing
The sand at Shoal Bay East is fine and pale, and it stays cool enough to walk on barefoot at midday in a way that darker Caribbean sand does not. The water shelves gently. You can walk out a long way before it reaches your chest, which matters if you are bringing children or anyone who would rather wade than swim.
There is reef at the eastern end. Bring a mask. We keep snorkel gear at the villa so you do not have to pack your own or rent it on the sand.
It is busier in the middle and empty at the ends
Here is the thing most guides leave out. The beach has a centre of gravity around the beach bars, and if you walk ten minutes in either direction from there, the crowd thins to almost nothing. Same sand. Same water. No chairs to rent and nobody selling you anything.
We usually send guests left, away from the main cluster, especially between about eleven and three when day visitors arrive. Early morning is the other answer. Before nine the beach is mostly locals walking dogs and a few people swimming laps parallel to the shore.
Shoal Bay East from the villa
Villa Okeanos sits above the bay at Upper Shoal Bay East, so you get the view of it all day and the walk down when you want the sand itself. The elevation is deliberate. You are not on the beach, which means you are not in the noise or the sargassum when it comes in, but you are close enough that a morning swim is a normal part of the day rather than an outing.
The tradeoff is honest: you drive or walk down rather than stepping straight onto sand. Guests who want beachfront should know that in advance. Guests who want the view, the pool, and quiet at night tend to prefer being up here.
Sargassum, since nobody else will mention it
Some years the seaweed arrives and some years it barely shows. It moves with currents and it is not predictable months ahead, whatever any website tells you. When it does come in, crews clear the main stretch of Shoal Bay East fairly quickly because the beach matters to the island economy.

Worth doing while you are down there
Walk the full length at least once. It takes about forty minutes each way at a normal pace, and the eastern end feels like a different beach from the western end. Take water. There is no shade for long stretches.
