Shoal Bay East is a long sweep (at 2 1/2 miles) of white and pink-hued sand with calm, clear turquoise water, and USA Today ranked it the #1 beach in the Caribbean in 2023. It stays uncrowded because Anguilla has no cruise ports and no high-rise hotels, and because the island spreads its visitors across 33 free public beaches. Villa Okeanos sits 150 feet up on the limestone ridge directly above it.
The length of Shoal Bay East beach is the whole point.
The sand is the reason, and it is not marketing
The sand at Shoal Bay East is fine with a pinkish hue. It stays cool enough to walk on barefoot at midday in a way that darker Caribbean sand does not. The water shelves gently. You can walk out a long way before it reaches your chest, which matters if you are bringing children or anyone who would rather wade than swim.
There is reef at the eastern end. Bring a mask to see the little fish swimming around. We keep snorkel gear at the villa so you do not have to pack your own or rent it on the sand.
It is busier in the middle and empty at the ends
Here is the thing most guides leave out. The beach has a centre of gravity around the beach bars, and if you walk ten minutes in either direction from there, the crowd thins to almost nothing. Same sand. Same water. No chairs to rent and nobody selling you anything.
Before 9:00 am the beach is mostly locals walking dogs, mediatating, exercising and a few people swimming laps parallel to the shore.
Shoal Bay East from the villa
Villa Okeanos sits above the bay at the eastern corner of Shoal Bay East, so you get the view of it all day. Its a quick 2 to 3-minute drive down the ridge to the beach. Guests who want the view, the pool, and quiet at night tend to prefer being up here.
Sargassum, since nobody else will mention it
Some years the seaweed arrives and some years it barely shows. It moves with currents and it is not predictable months ahead, whatever any website tells you. When it does come in, crews clear the main stretch of Shoal Bay East fairly quickly because the beach matters to the island economy.
If a completely clear waterline is the single thing your trip depends on, ask us before you book and we will tell you honestly what it has looked like recently.
Worth doing while you are down there
Walk the full length at least once. It takes about 20 minutes each way at a normal pace, and the eastern end feels like a different beach from the western end. Take water. There is no shade for long stretches.
