Shoal Bay, Anguilla: Why Shoal Bay Beach Is Ranked the Best Beach in North America (2026)

Shoal Bay, Anguilla (Shoal Bay East on the map, not to be confused with Shoal Bay West) is a long sweep of fine, powdery white sand with a faint pink tint, on the island’s east end, with calm, clear turquoise and blue water and reef at its eastern edge. In June 2026 the World’s 50 Best Beaches list named it the best beach in North America and sixth in the world, and USA Today ranked it the number one beach in the Caribbean in 2023. It stays peaceful because Anguilla has no cruise ports and no high-rise hotels, and visitors spread out across 33 free public beaches.

Why is Shoal Bay East ranked the best beach in the Caribbean?

• The sand. Fine and powdery with a pinkish hue, and it stays cool enough to walk on barefoot at midday in a way that darker sand does not.
• The water. The bay sits on the lee side of the island, so the sea is usually flat and clear. It shelves gently, so you can wade a long way out before it reaches your chest. That matters if you bring children or anyone who would rather wade than swim.
• The space. The sandy stretch never feels full, even in high season, and you can always find a quiet spot to relax.
• The feel. Laid-back. Beach bars, palm trees and clear water, with no high-rise resort blocking the view. For many visitors it is the dream Caribbean beach.

How does Shoal Bay compare with other Anguilla beaches?

Two other Anguilla beaches also made the 2026 North America list: Meads Bay at number 20 and Rendezvous Bay at number 45, both on the West End. Meads Bay is lined with resorts and restaurants and is better known for sunsets. Rendezvous Bay is quieter and made for long walks. Is Shoal Bay East good for snorkeling?

Yes. Shoal Bay East snorkeling centres on the reef at the eastern end of the beach, where the underwater life is plenty of small, bright fish, and the calm water makes it an easy snorkel for beginners and older children. Bring a mask, or use ours. We keep snorkel gear at the villa so you do not have to pack or rent it. Go in the morning for the best visibility, before the wind picks up. Is Shoal Bay crowded?

Here is what most guides leave out. The beach has a center of gravity around the beach bars, and if you walk ten minutes either way from there, the crowd thins to almost nothing. Same sand, same water, no chairs to rent and nobody selling you anything.

Before 9:00 am the beach is mostly locals walking dogs, meditating or exercising, and a few people swimming laps parallel to the shore. That is the most peaceful hour of the day.

Where to eat and drink on Shoal Bay

The beach bars and restaurants are part of the appeal, and you can rent lounge chairs and an umbrella from most of them. The ones on or near the sand include:

• Uncle Ernie’s: a casual beach shack in the middle of the beach, known for barbecue, burgers and rum punch.
• Madeariman: a feet-in-the-sand bistro with salads, grills and stone-oven pizza.
• Gwen’s Reggae Bar and Grill: grilled fish, ribs and rum punch, relaxed rather than refined.
• Elodia’s: a little away from the busiest stretch, with a quieter feel. Good crayfish.
• Tropical Sunset: on a more private part of the beach, known for coconut shrimp and cracked conch.
• L’Etoile at Manoah Boutique Hotel: refined French-Caribbean dining on the beach.
• 20 Knots at Zemi Beach House: resort dining nearby, and Zemi also has a spa.

How do you get to Shoal Bay and Shoal Bay Village?

Shoal Bay East, Anguilla is on the northeast coast. The settlement behind the beach is often listed as Shoal Bay Village by booking sites and villa agencies. From Villa Okeanos it is a short drive down the ridge, with free parking at Elodia’s or Olas. It is a drive, not a walk. Every beach in Anguilla is public, so anyone can use it, including day-trippers from St. Maarten (Saint Martin). Island Harbour, the fishing village with Scilly Cay and Falcon’s Nest, is a few minutes further along the coast.

Where to stay near Shoal Bay East

Shoal Bay East hotels include Zemi Beach House and Manoah Boutique Hotel, and private villas sit on the ridge above the beach, including ours. The trade-off is simple: a beachfront room puts you on the sand, while a hillside villa gives you the view, the breeze and quiet. What about sargassum on Shoal Bay?

Some years the seaweed arrives and some years it barely shows. It moves with currents and is not predictable months ahead, whatever any website says. When it does come in, crews clear the main stretch fairly quickly because the beach matters to the island economy. Tips for a day on Shoal Bay beach, Anguilla

• Walk the full length at least once. It takes about 20 minutes each way at a normal pace, and the eastern end feels like a different beach.
• Take water and a hat. There is no shade for long stretches.
• Go early for flat, clear turquoise water and an empty beach, and stay late for the light.
• Swim in the morning, lunch at a beach bar, then relax at the quiet eastern end in the afternoon.
• Use reef-safe sunscreen, especially if you snorkel the reef.
